The Power of Moms

One of the coolest things about writing this book is the people I've gotten to meet and chat with along the way. A couple weeks ago, I had a great call with Stan Mitchell, a pastor from Everybody Church.

Stan is an ally for people coming out. He has conversations with people who are coming out LGBT and also works with their parents and loved ones. The stories I read of these conversations frequently bring me to tears.

Stan introduced me to Mama Bears, an organization started to support moms when their kids come out. They have a bunch of private Facebook groups for support, including five subgroups focusing on various aspects of being a loving mom with an LGBTQ kid.

A cool link from Mama Bears is the Serendipitydodah blog, https://serendipitydodah.wordpress.com/. There, you'll find fifty stories from moms about how they handled their kids coming out. Many of the moms reference their Christian faith and how that played into their experiences.

Stan summed it up well in a post he made a couple days back:

"Scripture never compares the love of God to the love of a preacher, or a church, or a bible scholar. Again and again, though, Divine love is compared to the love of a parent for their child. And never, frankly, is that comparison more beautifully or believably made than when that parent is a mother."

Leaving you all with a gift from the power of moms!
